ArcelorMittal has begun supplying clean electricity to its Indian joint venture, AM/NS India, through a newly commissioned 1GW hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh. The $700 million initiative, developed by AM Green Energy—a wholly owned subsidiary of ArcelorMittal—marks the company’s largest foray into renewable power.

This hybrid facility combines solar, wind, and an upcoming hydro pumped storage system, currently in testing and set to be operational by June 2025. Once fully integrated, the project will supply at least 250MW of round-the-clock power, supporting continuous steel production. The facility is expected to meet over 20% of AM/NS India’s energy demand at its Hazira steel plant in Gujarat.

Spanning 2,400 acres for solar and 700 acres for wind, the site includes approximately 1.5 million solar panels and 91 wind turbines. Together, they will generate around 2.5 billion kWh annually—enough to power nearly 10 million Indian homes—and reduce AM/NS India’s carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes per year. This effort aligns with the JV’s goal of cutting carbon intensity by 20% by 2030 from 2021 levels.

ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal praised the project’s efficient delivery within 18 months, calling it one of the fastest of its scale in India. He emphasized the company’s growing investment in renewables to support both clean energy security and decarbonization.

This venture is part of ArcelorMittal’s broader 2.3GW renewable portfolio spanning India, Brazil, and Argentina. These initiatives are projected to contribute $1.9 billion in additional annual EBITDA by the end of 2027.
