Amentum, Kyoto Fusioneering agree fusion collaboration

The two companies “intend to pursue joint opportunities across major public and private fusion programmes, integrating Amentum’s established, technology-agnostic fusion engineering capability and expertise in systems engineering, plant integration, nuclear safety, digital engineering and programme delivery with Kyoto Fusioneering’s confinement-agnostic fuel cycle, breeding blanket and plasma heating systems and its experience integrating them into fusion plant designs”.

They will also seek to “explore opportunities to combine fusion engineering and expertise with advanced digital and AI-driven engineering and programme delivery tools. This has the potential to optimise design cycles, improve predictive performance and accelerate the transition from experimental systems towards commercially viable fusion plants”.

Kiyoshi Seko, president and chief operating officer of Kyoto Fusioneering, said: “Amentum brings nuclear engineering and programme delivery experience at the scale fusion programmes will need as they move toward construction. We look forward to working with the Amentum team to combine that experience with our fuel cycle, breeding blanket and plasma heating systems.”

Mark Whitney, president of Amentum’s Energy and Environment business, said: “By combining Amentum’s capabilities with Kyoto Fusioneering’s advanced fusion technologies, we can help address the engineering and delivery challenges required to move fusion from experimental systems towards commercially viable power plants.”

Kyoto Fusioneering was spun out of Kyoto University in 2019 and is based in Tokyo and Kyoto with subsidiaries in the UK, the USA and Germany. Amentum is based in Virginia in the US, with about 50,000 employees in more than 70 countries.
