Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda Announces Key Leadership Appointments To Strengthen Company’s Strategic Direction

Avangrid, Inc., a leading sustainable energy company and part of the Iberdrola Group, has announced two significant leadership appointments. Joe Purington has been named CEO of Avangrid Networks, and Sy Oytan has been appointed CEO of Avangrid Power. Both leaders bring extensive experience within the company and assume their new responsibilities with immediate effect.

These appointments follow recent changes at the top leadership level. In June 2025, Pedro Azagra, the former CEO of Avangrid, was appointed CEO of Iberdrola, S.A. by Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán and the Iberdrola Board of Directors. Following this transition, Jose Antonio Miranda was named CEO of Avangrid, and Kimberly Harriman was appointed as Deputy CEO.

Joe Purington takes on the role of CEO of Avangrid Networks after a long and successful career at Central Maine Power (CMP), where he served in various leadership positions for 28 years. He became President and CEO of CMP in 2021 and, in 2023, expanded his role to oversee Networks’ shared services, including Planning & Regulatory, Customer Service, Operations, Gas, and Business Development. In his new role, Purington will be responsible for all of Avangrid’s network operations. Trish Nilsen, CEO of NYSEG and RG&E, and Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of CNG, SCG, and UI and CEO of BGC, will report directly to him.

Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda, stated, “As Avangrid looks to the future and works to deliver on our plan to invest $20 billion in the U.S. grid by the end of the decade, I believe Joe and Sy have the right combination of skill and experience to continue building on Avangrid’s forward momentum. These new leadership appointments represent the strength of the leadership team we have built at Avangrid and reaffirm our ongoing commitment to deliver an innovative, reliable, and resilient energy future.”

Sy Oytan steps into the position of CEO of Avangrid Power, bringing with him over 24 years of global experience in the energy sector. He joined Avangrid in 2020 and most recently served as Chief Operating Officer of Offshore. Prior to that, Oytan held senior positions at independent power producers in Europe as well as global energy and engineering firms such as Arup, Siemens Gamesa, and Schlumberger. Throughout his career, he has led the development, construction, and operation of more than 10 GW of energy projects, including wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, and gas-fired combined cycle technologies.

Oytan holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Middle East Technical University in Turkey and a master’s degree in industrial management from Clemson University in South Carolina. He has also completed executive education programs in business administration at Yale University and INSEAD. With these leadership changes, Avangrid aims to strengthen its operational focus across both networks and power businesses, continuing its mission to deliver clean, reliable, and sustainable energy to communities across the United States.
