Biogas industry gathers to debate risks and opportunities

The World Biogas Expo 2026 returns to Birmingham today (8-9 July) with the industry facing a new mix of risks and opportunities since the 2025 edition.

The Middle East crisis, dominating the energy agenda since the end of February, has spurred growing recognition of biogas as a strategic energy security asset – complementing its decarbonisation appeal – and shone the spotlight on the need for greater local energy independence.

Despite the signing of a last month, geopolitical tensions continue to simmer, with sirens activated in Bahrain and Kuwait after the US hit more than 80 Iranian targets on Tuesday (7 July).

Nations facing cooking fuel shortages due to are embracing biogas. The Fortune Business Insights market research firm projects the global biogas market will reach $56.1bn in 2026.
