UK-based Future Biogas has full ownership of a portfolio of six gas-to-grid anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities after acquiring the remaining 49% stake from Foresight Environmental Infrastructure (FGEN) for £104m ($139m).
Future Biogas said full ownership will accelerate investment opportunities across the portfolio, including capacity expansions and operational enhancements.
The acquisition will initially be funded through an equity commitment by investment firm 3i Infrastructure and the company’s existing cash resources.
It plans to replace the majority of the equity funding through long-term debt refinancing before March 2027.
Philipp Lukas, CEO of Future Biogas, said, “Full ownership will allow us to progress these investments more quickly, unlocking further growth and strengthening Future Biogas’s position…in the UK.”
The company acquired its initial in the portfolio in 2024 under a £68.1m ($87.5m) deal.
As of 2024, the six AD plants had a combined gas output of 333 GWh. According to Lukas, the company has delivered significant improvements in operational performance since taking majority ownership.
In February, Future Biogas Burton Agnes Renewables – a biomethane production facility at Harpham Grange Farm in East Yorkshire – for an undisclosed fee.
The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) reports that there are currently more than 750 AD plants operational across the UK, processing around 36 million tonnes of organic wastes and residues annually.
The UK AD industry produces an estimated 21 TWh of biogas each year, avoiding emissions equivalent to around 1% of the UK’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions.
