German biotech startup Colipi plans to use carbon dioxide captured from industrial exhaust gases to produce bio-based materials, including low-carbon alternatives to plant-based oils.
The firm will filter CO2 from combustion gas used in steam generation at the Hamburg production site of Continental’s ContiTech group. The captured CO2 will feed microorganisms in a bioreactor, which will convert a mix of CO2, hydrogen and oxygen into lower-carbon alternatives to plant-derived oils such as palm oil.
Colipi plans to lease research and production space from automotive manufacturing giant Continental at the ContiTech facility from summer 2026.
