BOC’s new carbon dioxide capture and liquefaction plant will be opening soon in Teesside, according to Product Manager CO2 Matthew Onions.
In a LinkedIn update, he wrote, “Having been under construction for many months now, the new facility is located alongside our North Tees hydrogen plant and will provide BOC’s customers with a significant new UK-based supply.”
It marks the fifth site in Teesside for the Linde group company.
“The plant is a significant investment for BOC, increasing supply chain security for our customers and business – it’s a real game changer,” said Onions. “BOC is in a great position to support the development now of a low-carbon future.”
BOC has retrofitted carbon capture technology onto an existing steam methane reforming hydrogen plant. It is designed to capture over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, according to S&P Global.
The captured CO2 will be compressed and piped into the Northern Endurance Partnership transport network, which forms a core piece of the UK’s East Coast Cluster.
The UK government provided £100m ($133m) funding for Ensus UK’s Teesside biorefinery to , and protect domestic CO2 supplies.
