Bondada Engineering Wins Contract For 20 MW/120 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Storage Project In Gujarat

Bondada Engineering Limited has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) to develop a 20 MW / 120 MWh vanadium redox flow battery energy storage system (VRFB BESS) in Vadodara, Gujarat. The project is expected to become India’s largest grid-scale vanadium redox flow battery energy storage installation, marking a significant development in the country’s long-duration energy storage sector.

The battery energy storage system will be established at GIPCL’s 165 MW natural gas power plant complex in Vadodara. Along with the EPC scope, the contract includes operations and maintenance (O&M) services for ten years, providing Bondada Engineering with a long-term role in supporting the facility’s performance and reliability.

The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months from the receipt of the notification of award. The contract represents an important step in Bondada Engineering’s expansion into advanced energy storage technologies, which are becoming increasingly important as India adds more renewable energy capacity to its electricity network.

Vanadium redox flow batteries are a type of energy storage technology designed for applications requiring long-duration electricity storage. They can support grid stability by storing electricity and releasing it when required. Such systems can help manage fluctuations in renewable power generation, particularly from solar and wind energy, while improving the flexibility of electricity networks.

The company’s latest contract comes as India seeks to significantly increase its battery energy storage capacity to support its clean energy transition. The country has established an ambitious target of deploying approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030, compared with an existing installed capacity of around 9.3 GWh. Achieving this target will require substantial investment in storage infrastructure, technology development and project execution.

The growing gap between existing capacity and the national target presents opportunities for companies involved in energy storage development and deployment. Bondada Engineering’s project with GIPCL positions the company to participate in this expanding market.

The company has also confirmed that neither its promoters nor its group companies have any interest in GIPCL. Accordingly, the contract does not constitute a related-party transaction.
