Distributed Energy Infrastructure (DEI), a leading EPC provider specializing in utility-scale solar and storage projects, has completed a 7.1 MW solar and 4 MW battery storage project in Acton, Massachusetts. The site, once home to a chemical manufacturing facility, had been classified as an EPA Superfund site due to severe soil contamination, including asbestos.

In partnership with project owner Syncarpha Capital and racking provider Terrasmart, DEI implemented an innovative construction approach that transformed the previously contaminated property into a clean energy asset. The project’s success has earned it recognition as a finalist for Solar Builder’s 2025 Project of the Year award in the 1–10 MW category.

To ensure safe construction, DEI’s team employed rigorous environmental and safety protocols. Workers received Hazwoper training for hazardous materials handling, excavation was minimized with most electrical infrastructure built above ground, and existing site structures were repurposed to limit soil disturbance. DEI coordinated with six regulatory agencies throughout the process and deployed certified specialists for asbestos removal under strict oversight.

“Projects like Acton show what it takes to responsibly bring clean energy to communities while addressing the challenges of building on historically contaminated land,” said Sean Harrington, President and CEO of Distributed Energy Infrastructure. “By transforming a brownfield into a productive solar and storage site, we’re expanding access to renewable energy, strengthening the local grid, and putting otherwise unusable land back to work.”
