Swedish green hydrogen-based e-fuel firm Liquid Wind and its subsidiaries are now up for sale after the firm confirmed it was declared bankrupt on Monday (11 May).

In a statement, the company said Lars Melin of Styrks Law Firm has been appointed as bankruptcy trustee to oversee the bankruptcy administration.

Liquid Wind did not disclose how many employees could be affected, but said staff had met with the bankruptcy trustee.

“The company would like to extend its gratitude to employees, partners, customers and other stakeholders who have contributed to the company’s work over the years,” it concluded.

Founded in 2017, Liquid Wind has been developing e-methanol projects across Sweden and Finland to supply the shipping sector. It currently has no projects in construction or operation.

The company’s portfolio includes four projects in Sweden and one in Finland, all of which plan to produce 100,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year using green hydrogen and capture carbon dioxide.

Just last week, Liquid Wind applied for an environmental permit for a revived plant in Örnsköldsvik being developed with Övik Energy.

The application represented an attempt to revive the former FlagshipOne project, which Ørsted scrapped in 2024 despite taking FID and buying out Liquid Wind’s stake in 2022.

Liquid Wind’s collapse comes amid mounting pressure across the European green hydrogen and e-fuels sector, where developers have struggled with high production costs, slow final investment decisions and uncertainty around demand for low-carbon fuels.
