The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will host the Green Cities Mayors’ Meeting 2026 at its headquarters in London on 22 and 23 June. The event will bring together mayors, urban planners, business leaders, policymakers, and sustainability experts to celebrate 10 years of progress under the Green Cities programme while discussing new ways to accelerate climate action and sustainable urban development.Over the past decade, the EBRD’s Green Cities initiative has expanded to include 60 cities across three continents, helping improve the lives of more than 80 million people.
Through targeted investments and policy support, the programme has enabled cities to reduce emissions, improve air quality, modernise infrastructure, and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges. It has also demonstrated how cities can successfully move from planning to implementation, delivering practical environmental solutions even in complex circumstances.
The conference will begin with a keynote address by EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso, who is expected to highlight the increasingly important role cities play in addressing climate change and other global challenges. Throughout the two-day event, participants will explore how investment, policy development, and collaboration can help cities implement large-scale sustainability initiatives and improve urban living standards.
One of the key sessions, titled “Decade of Impact,” will bring together mayors from across the EBRD regions, including Luc Gnacadja of Cotonou, Andriy Sadovyi of Lviv, and Fatma Şahin of Gaziantep. The discussion will be moderated by BBC presenter Lucy Hockings and will include insights from Josué Tanaka, Principal Finance Advisor to the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.
The session will focus on how cities can finance and deliver green projects that improve quality of life while supporting long-term environmental goals. It will be livestreamed on 22 June at 10:00 BST.The meeting will also explore innovative approaches to future urban development. A discussion featuring Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Charles Lin will examine how artificial intelligence and digital technologies can help cities become more efficient, sustainable, and resilient.
Other sessions will cover topics such as electrification, urban heat management, affordable clean energy, housing solutions, and the modernisation of waste and wastewater systems.Supported by the TaiwanBusiness-EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund and the Green Climate Fund, the conference aims to strengthen partnerships and encourage greater collaboration among cities and stakeholders.
Through its Green Cities programme, the EBRD continues to support municipalities across three continents with investments and expert guidance designed to improve climate resilience, modernise public services, and create healthier and more sustainable urban environments.
