EDF Power Solutions has been awarded a 110 MW lithium-ion battery storage project in Japan as part of the country’s second Long-Term Decarbonization Auction (LTDA). Marking its first battery initiative in Japan, the project will feature a three-hour storage duration and will be located near Okayama in the southern region of the main island. Commissioning is scheduled for 2029. Patrick Charignon, Asia-Pacific Executive VP at EDF power solutions said: “ We are very proud to have won our first battery project in Japan. This success rewards the work of our teams and illustrates the expertise of EDF power solutions in storage technologies, an essential tool for supporting the decarbonization of electricity.”systems.”

Under the auction terms, EDF Power Solutions will perform a full daily charge and discharge cycle, injecting 110 MW into the grid for three hours each day—enhancing grid flexibility and supporting renewable energy integration. As Japan accelerates the deployment of storage capacity to complement its growing share of renewables and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, the project aligns with the nation’s target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Globally, EDF Power Solutions brings over 15 years of battery expertise, currently operating more than 600 MW of storage and developing an additional 1 GW. The company is actively involved in markets such as the U.S. and South Africa, delivering grid-connected and hybrid battery solutions to boost grid resilience and optimize renewable integration.
