An Egyptian-Emirati consortium is planning to invest around EGP 20 billion in a new high-voltage power transmission project that will strengthen Egypt’s electricity network and support the country’s growing renewable energy sector.
The project involves the construction of a 500-kilovolt transmission line that will connect renewable energy projects in the Gulf of Suez to the Hawamdiya substation, located south of Giza. The new transmission corridor is expected to improve the transfer of electricity generated from large-scale solar and wind power plants to the national grid.
The consortium is led by Intelligent Globe Construction Group, which operates in both Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. According to a government official who spoke to Asharq Business, construction of the transmission line is expected to take approximately 30 months to complete.
Once operational, the new transmission line will increase the capacity of Egypt’s electricity grid, enabling it to handle a larger volume of renewable energy. This will support the integration of additional clean electricity from the Gulf of Suez, one of Egypt’s key regions for wind and solar energy development.
The investment forms part of Egypt’s broader strategy to modernize its electricity transmission infrastructure. Expanding and upgrading transmission networks is considered essential for improving grid reliability and ensuring that renewable energy generated in different parts of the country can be delivered efficiently to consumers.
The project also supports Egypt’s national renewable energy goals. The government aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s electricity mix to 45% by 2028 through continued investments in solar, wind, and supporting grid infrastructure.
The latest investment follows years of significant government spending on the power sector. Over the past decade, Egypt has invested around EGP 965 billion in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution projects. These investments have helped strengthen the country’s energy security while creating the infrastructure needed to accelerate the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable sources of electricity.
