Enel Commissions 55 MW Pian di Giorgio Solar Plant with 39.5 MW BESS in Italy

Enel has commissioned the Pian di Giorgio project on Via Teverina in Viterbo province, Italy, comprising a 55 MW solar plant with a 42 MW grid connection capacity. Covering 72 hectares, the site also includes a 39.5 MW electrochemical storage system (BESS) with a 35 MW connection capacity.

The project was authorized by the Province of Viterbo on behalf of the Lazio Region in October 2021. The construction began in May 2024 following approval of the executive project by the Province of Viterbo.

The solar plant was activated at the end of February, while the BESS became operational in early March 2025. It features 100,000 bifacial modules on 1,800 trackers, 225 string inverters, and 10 transformer cabins.

The BESS component comprises 28 battery containers and 14 energy conversion units. The solar plant aligns with the 2024 Capacity Market framework, while the BESS follows the 2023 framework.
