Poland’s plans to allocate over €500m ($585m) in subsidies for 343MW of green and low-carbon hydrogen production under the country’s fourth Covid recovery payment have been approved by the EU.
The European Commission signed off the €7.2bn ($8.4m) package, which will also include funding to deploy over 1,000 electric or hydrogen buses.
The funding will be issued to companies to build electrolyser installations at least 20MW in capacity.
Polish development bank BGK signed funding agreements under the programme with state-owned oil and gas firm .
Companies will be able to use funds for projects either using exclusively renewable energy under the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin rules, or low-emissions sources in line with the low-carbon fuels rules, which were approved last year.
The projects lined up for the funds were selected by the Polish government last year.
State-owned Orlen will receive the largest share with PLN 1.2bn ($331.3m) for the first phase of its distributed Hydrogen Eagle Project, which aims to install 700MW of electrolyser capacity in Poland to supply its refineries.
Orlen subsidiary Lotos Green H2 will gain PLN 523m ($144m) for a 100MW project at Orlen’s Gdansk refinery.
Energy firm Tauron was awarded PLN 127.8m ($35.3m) for a green hydrogen production and refuelling project in Śląskie province.
Renewables firm Promet-Plast secured PLN 123m ($33.9m) for a hydrogen production and storage project in Gaju Oławskim.
Chemicals company Bioagra was given PLN 127.6m ($35.2m) for a green hydrogen plant.
