Forty-five hydrogen offtake projects have registered interest under the first round of the European Commission’s clean hydrogen supply and demand matching platform.
The Hydrogen Mechanism, under the EU’s Energy and Raw Materials Platform, saw supply opportunities registered from 265 projects.
Designed to link up producers and offtakers, the mechanism saw 87% of suppliers receive at least one expression of interest, and 50% receive at least three.
Across hydrogen derivatives, the scheme also connected 47 low-carbon ammonia producers with supply opportunities as well as 37 methanol projects, 14 sustainable aviation fuel projects, and 18 e-methane projects.
The initial results come after the Commission the first round of the scheme in July 2025.
While the mechanism provided a chance to connect producers and end-users, the Commission said it is for participants to progress arrangements outside of the scheme.
In a statement, it said it is now reflecting on the next steps for the Hydrogen Mechanism, including how to support the development of hydrogen infrastructure.
It comes as the European hydrogen market struggles to scale, amid perceived low demand and high costs.
The mechanism itself has been met with a degree of scepticism. Trade body Hydrogen Europe previously said it was just one “small part” of the market building process.
It warned its impact would remain limited without targeted support for offtake.
