The EU’s rush to scale up biogas and biomethane production is uncontrolled and could lock in pollution, fuel industrial livestock farming, and undermine climate goals, according to a new report from the Methane Matters coalition.
The report, ‘Biogas Policies in the EU: Levelling up or locking in?’, claims that the EU has handed the biogas industry more than €37bn in public funds without ensuring proper regulation.
This comes on top of €28bn in private investments expected by 2030, which the coalition warns could entrench unsustainable biogas production and expose the bloc to long-term climate and financial risks.
