GEON, the future technologies division of Kabra Extrusiontechnik Ltd, has announced the successful integration and commissioning of a 2.88 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat. Completed within five months, the project is among the largest utility-scale battery storage installations in India and has entered full commercial operation.

The project forms part of the expanding renewable energy ecosystem in Khavda, which is rapidly emerging as one of India’s largest clean energy hubs. GEON was responsible for the complete scope of system integration, execution, testing, and commissioning, including the deployment of Power Conditioning Systems (PCS), transformers, and advanced Energy Management Systems (EMS).

Commenting on the milestone, Anand Kabra, Chairman and Managing Director of GEON, said the project reflects the rapid scale-up of energy storage infrastructure across India. He noted that battery storage is evolving from a supporting technology into a critical component of grid-scale renewable energy integration and reliable power delivery.

Saurabh Jain, CEO – Energy Storage at GEON, highlighted that the company delivered the entire project as the nodal agency within an accelerated five-month timeline. He attributed the achievement to effective planning, coordinated execution, and strong collaboration between engineering and on-site project teams. According to Jain, the project demonstrates GEON’s capability to execute large-scale energy storage deployments while maintaining high standards of quality and operational efficiency.

The commissioning comes at a time when investments in battery energy storage systems are gaining momentum across India. The growing adoption of renewable energy and the increasing need for grid-balancing solutions are driving demand for large-scale storage infrastructure capable of improving grid reliability and dispatchability.

Looking ahead, GEON plans to expand its presence in the energy storage sector through domestic manufacturing initiatives. The company is advancing plans for a battery gigafactory aimed at supporting future demand and strengthening India’s energy storage supply chain ecosystem.
