Georgia gas plant successfully trials 50% hydrogen blend

Utility company Georgia Power has successfully completed a trial using a 50% hydrogen blend to operate a natural gas turbine at its McDonough-Atkinson plant in Georgia.

Japan’s Mitsubishi Power completed the hydrogen blending on one M501GAC gas turbine unit, with an approximate output of 283MW.

The pair have said the effort is the largest test of its kind to date. The 50% blend provides a 22% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with 100% natural gas.

The emissions savings are due to hydrogen’s low volumetric density, meaning more gas needs to be used to produce the same power.
