The German state of Schleswig-Holstein has granted €1.6m ($1.9m) in funding for a new 2MW electrolyser at a green hydrogen facility to provide fuel for two refuelling stations in the region.
The new electrolyser will join two existing 225kW systems at eFarming’s Bosbüll, North Frisia site – a project founded by energy company GP Joule – raising green hydrogen production capacity from around 36.5 to 180 tonnes-per-year.
Due online this year, it would supply eFarming-operated filling stations in Husum and Niebüll, with waste heat generated in production feeding into the region’s district heating network.
eFarming is a project featuring up to 20 regional and community organisations, including wind and solar farms and municipal utilities. It includes two hydrogen refuelling stations and 10 trucks.
Schleswig-Holstein’s energy ministry said the boost to green hydrogen production comes in response to an increased demand for clean fuel.
State Secretary for Energy Transition, Joschka Knuth, added, “Enabling hydrogen production from renewable energies in Germany is of strategic importance – current geopolitical conflicts clearly demonstrate this.”
The cash injection comes as Germany continues to bolster hydrogen capabilities across production, transportation, and mobility infrastructure.
Recently, its parliament passed a bill for the use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) in road mobility under the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive III from 8% to 10% by 2040.
The resolution was slated to strengthen domestic value creation and incentivise producers by encouraging offtake agreements.
