US and Cayman Islands chipmaker GlobalFoundries (GF) has announced a $16bn investment to expand its semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities in New York and Vermont.
The $16bn investment includes more than $13bn to expand and modernise GlobalFoundries’ facilities in the two locations, plus an additional $3bn for research & development in areas such as advanced packaging, photonics, and gallium nitride technologies.
GF is working with major tech companies – including Apple, SpaceX, AMD, Qualcomm, NXP, and GM – on growing its US semiconductor production.
These partnerships focus mainly on technologies essential for AI, aerospace, automotive, and communications, such as silicon photonics, GaN-based power solutions, and GF’s low-power 22FDX platform.
