Polish developer Hynfra is looking to develop a $1.5bn green hydrogen-based ammonia project in the Philippines, targeting East Asian fuel and fertiliser markets.
Under a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an unnamed local partner, the firm will evaluate the country’s investment potential and undertake feasibility studies on the potential project on the island of Mindoro.
The project’s initial phase would look to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year and potentially scale up to one million tonnes.
While no investment or construction timeline has been revealed, Hynfra said the development would feature onsite renewable energy generation, an ammonia synthesis plant, export logistics, and maintenance infrastructure.
“Production on Mindoro shortens supply routes and reduces the value chain’s exposure to politically sensitive corridors, including the Strait of Malacca, through which a substantial share of energy imports to China, Japan, and South Korea passes,” Hynfra stated.
The company aims to meet demand for green hydrogen and ammonia in countries like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, while also helping to diversify fertiliser supplies following disruption in the Middle East.
It will add to the company’s broad portfolio of large-scale green ammonia projects across the Middle East and Europe.
Its most advanced is in Jordan, where it plans to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year. The project was approved by the Jordanian government in May and is targeting by September 2027.
