ib vogt Begins Commercial Operations at 99 MWp Tantangan Solar Power Plant in the Philippines

International solar developer ib vogt has commenced commercial electricity generation at its 99 MWp Tantangan Solar Power Plant in South Cotabato, Philippines, following an energisation ceremony held less than a year after the project’s groundbreaking.

The Tantangan Solar Power Plant is ib vogt’s second solar project in Mindanao and one of the region’s largest renewable energy developments. The project has been recognised as a national priority under the Philippines’ clean energy agenda and is significantly larger than the country’s typical solar projects, which generally range between 10 MWp and 50 MWp.

The project integrates solar photovoltaic (PV) generation with battery energy storage, enabling a dispatchable, near-baseload renewable energy solution to address rising electricity demand and improve grid reliability in Mindanao.

Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate more than 150 GWh of clean electricity annually, sufficient to power over 82,000 households, while avoiding more than 66,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Commenting on the milestone, David Ludwig, Chief Executive Officer of ib vogt APAC, said the project marks the company’s first solar-plus-storage hybrid project in Southeast Asia and the first of more than 500 MW of hybrid renewable energy capacity that ib vogt expects to have operational or under construction across the Philippines by the end of 2026. He added that the company remains focused on accelerating the deployment of its renewable energy pipeline across the Philippines and the broader Southeast Asian region.

Marat Zapparov, Chief Executive Officer of Pentagreen Capital, said the Tantangan project demonstrates how targeted financing can accelerate the development of high-quality renewable energy infrastructure in ASEAN. He noted that Pentagreen, together with British International Investment (BII), provided subordinated financing to support the project from groundbreaking to energisation in less than a year.

Rohit Anand, Managing Director and Head of Asia Infrastructure and Climate Direct Investments at BII, said the energisation highlights ib vogt’s capability to deliver large-scale renewable energy projects. He added that BII remains committed to mobilising investment into clean energy infrastructure and supporting the energy transition across Southeast Asia through strategic partnerships.
