State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation plans to launch its first full-scale carbon capture and storage pilot by storing captured carbon dioxide in depleted oil wells at the Gandhar oilfield in Gujarat, India.
CO2 will be captured from nearby industrial units in the Dahej region and ONGC’s Hazira plant.
Once captured, the gas will be transported to the Gandhar field, where ONGC plans to inject around 100 tonnes of CO2 per day into two abandoned onshore wells, using subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs for long-term storage.
The corporation has previously sourced CO2 from Indian Oil Corporation’s Koyali refinery for injection activities at the site.
