The UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme, launched on 5th January 2015, has completed a transformative decade, revolutionizing energy efficiency in India. Alongside the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), UJALA has illuminated homes, streets, and pathways across the nation while driving significant energy savings and reducing carbon emissions.

Initially launched as the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP), UJALA made energy-efficient lighting affordable and accessible to millions of households. Over 36 crore LED bulbs have been distributed, resulting in massive reductions in electricity consumption and household energy bills. By slashing LED bulb prices from Rs 450–500 in 2014 to just Rs 70, the scheme removed financial barriers, encouraging widespread adoption.

Key achievements under UJALA:

  • 36.87 crore LED bulbs distributed across India.
  • 407.92 crore LED bulbs sold in the Indian market, transforming the lighting industry.
  • Significant energy savings and reductions in household electricity costs.
  • Enhanced environmental sustainability by cutting carbon emissions.

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), in partnership with the Ministry of Power and DISCOMs, spearheaded the implementation of UJALA, ensuring transparency through e-procurement and fostering competitive pricing.

Launched on the same day as UJALA, the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) has emerged as a beacon of efficiency in public lighting. Over 1.34 crore LED streetlights have been installed nationwide, achieving annual energy savings of 9,001 million units (MUs) and reducing CO₂ emissions by 6.2 million tonnes.

Highlights of SLNP:

  • Significant reduction in peak energy demand by over 1,500 MW.
  • Lowered operational costs for municipalities without upfront financial burdens.
  • Enhanced public safety through reliable LED streetlights, maintained at over 95% uptime by EESL.

Both initiatives have been pivotal in aligning India’s energy sector with sustainability goals. The energy savings and reduction in carbon emissions underscore India’s leadership in global energy conservation efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of affordable and sustainable energy has propelled India toward a brighter, more efficient future. Reflecting on the journey, EESL reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovation in energy efficiency and expanding these models globally.

As UJALA and SLNP mark a decade of impact, they illuminate the path forward, proving that government-led initiatives can drive significant economic and environmental progress.
