India’s Installed Wind Power Capacity Reaches 59.2 GW With 11% Year-On-Year Growth In September 2026

India’s wind energy sector continued to demonstrate steady growth during the first nine months of 2026, with the country’s total installed wind power capacity reaching 59,201.07 MW by the end of September. The expansion reflects the growing contribution of wind energy to India’s renewable energy portfolio, supported by consistent capacity additions across all three quarters of the year. The sector recorded installations exceeding 1 GW in each reporting period, indicating sustained project development and investment activity.

According to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India added approximately 1,584 MW of wind power capacity between January and March 2026. This was followed by an additional 1,348 MW during the April-June quarter. The installation pace accelerated during the July-September period, when the country added approximately 1,758 MW, representing the highest quarterly addition during the reported period.

The cumulative installed capacity of 59,201.07 MW represents an approximately 11 percent increase compared to the 53,123 MW recorded during the corresponding period last year. The growth highlights the continued development of India’s wind power infrastructure as the country works towards expanding renewable energy generation and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

At the state level, wind power installations remain concentrated in a few major renewable energy markets. Gujarat continued to lead the country in cumulative installed wind capacity, reaching 17,043.76 MW by the end of September 2026. Tamil Nadu ranked second with 12,335.42 MW, followed by Karnataka with 8,973.74 MW. Together, these three states account for a substantial share of India’s total installed wind power capacity.

Maharashtra also maintained a significant position, with cumulative installations reaching 6,484.81 MW. Rajasthan recorded 5,815.29 MW, while Andhra Pradesh had an installed capacity of 4,604.68 MW. Madhya Pradesh contributed another 3,739.45 MW, further strengthening its position among the country’s established wind energy markets.

Other states also reported operational wind power installations, although their contributions remained comparatively smaller. Telangana recorded 128.10 MW of installed wind capacity, while Kerala had 71.52 MW by September 2026.

The continued expansion of wind power capacity reflects India’s efforts to strengthen its renewable energy infrastructure through policy support, private-sector investments and technological improvements. Consistent quarterly additions also indicate ongoing development across established wind energy markets.

With Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka maintaining their leadership, these states are expected to remain important contributors to future capacity expansion. As more wind projects advance towards commissioning, India’s wind energy sector will continue to support the country’s clean energy transition, improve renewable electricity availability and contribute to its long-term sustainability objectives.
