Semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies has opened a new semiconductor backend manufacturing site in Bangkok, Thailand.
Located in Samut Prakan, the site can expand to five modules, potentially making it one of Infineon’s largest backend manufacturing sites. The investment has been reported at $1.4bn.
It includes an advanced cleanroom, assembly and test capabilities, alongside wafer test and manufacturing automation to support the production of semiconductor products in automotive, industrial and energy infrastructure markets.
The site adds backend capacity to Infineon’s global manufacturing network and complements its frontend manufacturing operations. Its location in Southeast Asia also provides access to regional markets and global logistics networks.
Alexander Gorski, Chief Operations Officer of Infineon Technologies, said, “This [location] helps us further diversify our manufacturing network across regions and serve our customers with resilient capacity and great flexibility.”
The facility is currently employing around 350 people. That figure is expected to increase to approximately 1,000 as the first module ramps up.
It also incorporates water recycling, rainwater collection and solar generation, and operates using 100% green electricity.
Infineon said the facility forms part of its investment in Thailand’s semiconductor manufacturing sector, with the company also working with universities and industry partners on skills development.
The investment comes as Thailand seeks to expand its role in the global semiconductor supply chain. Its national semiconductor strategy targets around $80bn in investment and more than 230,000 jobs by 2050, with assembly, packaging and testing among the key areas for development.
