K Line signs FjordH2 hydrogen shipping agreement

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has signed a cooperation agreement with Provaris Energy and Norwegian Hydrogen to develop a commercial hydrogen shipping supply chain for Norway’s proposed 40,000 tonnes per year FjordH2 export project.

The agreement will advance shipping and fleet solutions linking Norway with northern Europe using Provaris’ H2Neo hydrogen carrier vessels and H2Leo storage barges, building on a 2025 memorandum of understanding.

The FjordH2 project, located in Ørskog, Norway, has secured land and completed technical and economic feasibility studies, though developers have yet to confirm a final investment decision timeline.

In early 2025, Provaris and Norwegian Hydrogen signed a conditional with Germany’s Uniper covering the project’s full planned output, with first shipments using H2Neo carriers targeted for early 2029.

Provaris CEO Martin Carolan said K Line will help mature a “scalable, cost-competitive” hydrogen shipping route, helping to meet Europe’s demand for pipeline-ready green hydrogen.

Norway is positioning itself as a key hydrogen export hub for Northern Europe, using abundant renewable power, offshore energy infrastructure, and close ties with Germany and the EU.

In January, Norwegian developer Gen2 Energy capacity for the first phase of its 195MW liquid green hydrogen project in Helgeland, having a liquid hydrogen trade route with Germany’s MB Energy in October 2025.
