Kerala Leads Rooftop Solar Adoption Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

Kerala has emerged as one of the frontrunners in rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with more than 1.3 lakh households powered through rooftop solar systems. According to official data, the state has already completed over 1.3 lakh installations and disbursed subsidies exceeding ₹925 crore.

The programme, which aims to accelerate household-level solar adoption across India, is witnessing strong uptake in Kerala, where both urban and rural communities are embracing solar to cut energy costs and reduce carbon emissions.

From rooftops in Kochi to solar-powered communities across Malabar and Travancore, the initiative is reshaping how households generate and consume power. Officials note that the scheme is not just expanding clean energy access, but also driving financial empowerment by lowering electricity bills and providing stable, sustainable energy.

With Kerala setting the benchmark, attention is now turning to other states. Assam has been identified as the next key focus area under the rooftop solar rollout.

The success of the scheme in Kerala is being hailed as a significant step towards India’s broader renewable energy goals, underscoring how household participation is critical to the clean energy transition.
