KIT-Led StoRIES Project Maps Future of Hybrid Energy Storage for Europe’s Clean Energy Transition

Researchers collaborate in a modern lab focused on energy storage technology

A major European research initiative coordinated by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has outlined a roadmap for the future of hybrid energy storage systems, highlighting their critical role in supporting a reliable, flexible, and climate-neutral energy system.

The recently concluded StoRIES (Storage Research Infrastructure Eco-System) project brought together research institutions, laboratories, industry stakeholders, and academic partners from across Europe to explore advanced energy storage solutions capable of addressing the challenges associated with growing renewable energy penetration. According to KIT, the project has established a European network of approximately 250 research infrastructures, specialized laboratories, and testing facilities focused on accelerating innovation in energy storage technologies.

One of the project’s key findings is that no single storage technology can meet all future energy system requirements. While battery storage systems are well suited for rapid grid balancing and short-term flexibility, thermal energy storage offers advantages for industrial heat applications. Hydrogen, meanwhile, was identified as a promising option for long-duration and seasonal energy storage. Based on these findings, StoRIES researchers developed a strategic research and innovation agenda aimed at advancing hybrid storage systems that combine multiple technologies to optimize performance and resilience.

The project also examined practical applications including the electrification of ports, decarbonization of heavy-duty transport, renewable energy supply for remote regions, and the repurposing of conventional power plant sites as energy storage and flexibility hubs. Researchers further explored integrated solutions linking electricity, heat, and hydrogen storage across industrial and building sectors.

Beyond technology development, StoRIES contributed to strengthening Europe’s energy innovation ecosystem through training programs, summer schools, mentoring initiatives, and international research exchanges. The project has been recognized by the European Commission as a notable contributor to the objectives of the European Green Deal and the continent’s broader clean energy transition.
