Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a new electrode design that improves the efficiency and selectivity of carbon dioxide electroreduction – a technology that uses renewable electricity and catalysts to convert CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels.

The team engineered a tandem catalytic system combining silver nanowires with copper-based catalysts. This enables sequential reactions that enhance the production of multi-carbon products such as ethylene.

In the process, the silver nanowires first convert CO2 into carbon monoxide, which is then transferred to adjacent copper sites where further reduction occurs.
