Lightsource bp’s 180 MW Prairie Ronde Solar Farm Begins Commercial Operations in Louisiana

Lightsource bp has officially commenced commercial operations at its 180 megawatt (MWdc) solar project in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. The $170 million privately funded project demonstrates how domestic energy investments can generate tangible benefits for local communities and the broader economy.

Located about 30 miles north of Lafayette, Prairie Ronde Solar is designed to enhance the United States’ renewable energy sector, revitalize domestic manufacturing, and stimulate economic growth in regions historically dependent on conventional energy.

Emilie Wangerman, Chief Operations Officer of Lightsource bp USA, highlighted the project’s contribution to energy security, describing it as a strong example of domestic energy investment. She stated that, through collaboration with partners, the Prairie Ronde solar project is enhancing grid resilience with U.S.-made products, supporting underserved communities, creating jobs, and reducing reliance on foreign imports.

Strengthening Local Economies with U.S.-Made Solar Technology

The Prairie Ronde solar farm incorporates solar equipment from U.S. manufacturers, including panels from Arizona-based First Solar and smart solar trackers from New Mexico-based Array Technologies.

The project is set to contribute over $20 million to St. Landry Parish throughout its lifespan, with $8.3 million allocated within the first five years after construction. These funds will support essential public services, including local schools and emergency response efforts. Additionally, an annual operating budget of $3.9 million will primarily benefit the local economy.

Jessie Bellard, St. Landry Parish President, emphasized the project’s transformative impact, stating that Lightsource bp’s investment marks a new chapter for the community and its schools. He noted that the funding supports job creation, infrastructure enhancements, and improved education, positioning St. Landry Parish as a growing center for innovation and opportunity.

As part of its community-focused commitment, Lightsource bp established the St. Landry Parish Community Fund in 2023. This initiative ensures that the project directly benefits local residents, with funding directed toward education, community development, and other priority areas. Notable contributions include a new Welcome Center for the St. Landry Parish Veterans’ Memorial and additional support for classroom learning and athletics in local schools.
