L&T Strengthens Energy Storage Portfolio with 3 GW Saidongar-1 PSP Order in Maharashtra

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major contract from Torrent Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd for the construction of the 3 GW Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Maharashtra, marking one of the largest pumped storage orders awarded in the country. The development was reported by industry sources tracking India’s renewable and energy storage sector.

The Saidongar-1 project, located in Raigad district, will have a total installed capacity of 3,000 MW and is designed as an open-loop pumped storage facility. It will comprise ten generating units of 300 MW each, making it the biggest pumped storage project currently under development in India. Pumped storage projects are increasingly viewed as critical infrastructure for balancing renewable energy and ensuring grid stability as solar and wind capacity expands rapidly.

L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure business vertical will be responsible for executing the project. The scope of work includes design and engineering, along with the construction of all major civil structures and hydromechanical components required for the facility. While the company has not disclosed the exact contract value, it has classified the order as a “large” one, which typically falls in the range of ₹2,500 crore to ₹5,000 crore, as per L&T’s internal project classification.

The Saidongar-1 PSP is expected to play a key role in enhancing Maharashtra’s energy security by storing surplus electricity during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak hours. Such projects help improve grid reliability and support higher penetration of renewable energy.

The order strengthens L&T’s presence in the pumped storage and hydro infrastructure segment and adds to its robust order book in the clean energy and energy storage space.
