Malaysia is positioning itself at the forefront of the clean energy revolution in the Asia Pacific, leveraging strong renewable energy capabilities and policy commitment, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Speaking at the United Nations Asia-Pacific Business Forum 2025, Fadillah highlighted the country’s ambition to become a solar energy powerhouse, supported by its strategic location, high solar irradiance, and successful rollout of large-scale solar and floating solar projects.

“The successful implementation of floating solar farms and nationwide solar initiatives highlights our ability to harness clean energy resources,” he said.

Fadillah also pointed to the country’s untapped potential in biomass and hydropower, underscoring the broader strategy for renewable energy diversification.

A key focus of his address was the Asia Pacific Green Deal, a strategic framework to promote regional cooperation, renewable energy optimisation, and low-carbon economic development.

“This Green Deal is not just a strategy—it’s a roadmap for integrating economic progress with climate commitments,” he said. “Asia Pacific must work collectively—sharing best practices, investing in clean technologies, and developing regional carbon markets.”

He proposed that Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam could lead in establishing cross-border renewable energy trade systems, while urging advanced economies such as Japan and Australia to support the region through technological aid and capacity-building.

Fadillah also underscored the need for stronger public-private partnerships and global collaboration to secure financing and expertise for accelerating clean energy initiatives.

As the current ASEAN chair, Malaysia plans to play a catalytic role in enhancing regional integration, innovation, and investment in clean energy infrastructure.

“With Malaysia at the helm, ASEAN will intensify coordinated energy efforts, forging resilient and interconnected energy ecosystems,” he said, adding that the country will lead efforts through policy dialogues, strategic meetings, and multi-sectoral partnerships.
