The Ministry of Energy has announced a major initiative to install solar energy systems in government schools across the Kingdom. The program is aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing electricity consumption, and supporting long-term sustainability goals across the public education sector.
Under the initiative, more than 5,200 schools have been identified for solar panel installations. Work is already progressing, with solar systems successfully installed at more than 600 schools. The project is expected to generate significant energy savings once all targeted facilities are equipped with solar power systems.
According to the ministry, the initiative is expected to achieve annual energy savings of more than 110 million kilowatt-hours (kWh). This reduction could significantly lower the dependence of government schools on electricity supplied through the conventional grid and improve the overall efficiency of public facilities.
The solar installations will allow schools to generate clean electricity for their own operational requirements. By producing power on-site, educational facilities can reduce their reliance on traditional electricity sources while making greater use of renewable energy.
The initiative is also expected to improve the operational performance of school buildings. Solar energy systems, combined with improvements in energy management, can help reduce unnecessary electricity consumption and support more efficient use of energy across school campuses.
Beyond financial and operational benefits, the program has an important environmental objective. Increasing the use of renewable energy in public infrastructure can contribute to lower emissions and support national sustainability and environmental targets.
The installation of solar systems in schools also provides an opportunity to promote awareness of renewable energy among students and communities. Schools can serve as practical examples of how clean energy technologies can be integrated into everyday public infrastructure.
With thousands of educational facilities targeted under the program, the Ministry of Energy’s initiative represents a significant effort to modernize government infrastructure through renewable energy.
