The Government of India, through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, has been consistently working to promote renewable energy development across the country. As part of its nationwide initiatives, a total of approximately 13 lakh employment opportunities are estimated to be generated in the renewable energy sector by June 2025, according to studies by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and TERI. These opportunities span across solar, wind, biomass, and hydro power segments, offering direct and indirect jobs to local youth and trained technicians.

The Ministry has been implementing various schemes to support the generation of renewable energy. Among them is the “Development of Solar Parks and Ultra-Mega Solar Power Projects” scheme, which has led to the sanctioning of solar parks in multiple states, including a total sanctioned capacity of 4,248 MW in Madhya Pradesh alone. These parks are contributing significantly to the overall renewable energy installed capacity in the country.

The central government also launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) in February 2024. This national rooftop solar initiative aims to equip one crore households with rooftop solar systems by 2026-27. The program is being implemented across all States and Union Territories and has seen positive response and implementation, including thousands of applications and installations in districts like Satna, Madhya Pradesh.

Another key initiative is the Pradhan Mantri-Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), which is being implemented across India. This scheme focuses on enabling farmers to install solar pumps and grid-connected solar power plants. It is designed to reduce the dependence of farmers on diesel and grid-based electricity, while also providing them with an additional source of income through the sale of surplus power to the grid. Implementation of the scheme is carried out by State Implementing Agencies, and the capacities are allocated based on demand and progress from the states.

The Government has also focused on skilling initiatives to support the renewable energy ecosystem. As part of this effort, nearly 31,829 candidates have been trained under the Ministry’s Suryamitra, Vayumitra, and Jal-urja Mitra Skill Development Programmes. In addition, the Skill Council of Green Jobs (SCGJ) has conducted training and certification of thousands of individuals under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana and other skill development schemes in solar energy across India.

These initiatives showcase the government’s commitment to promoting clean energy while also focusing on inclusive economic development through job creation and skill-building. With continued efforts and cooperation between central and state governments, India is moving steadily towards achieving its renewable energy targets and ensuring a sustainable energy future for the nation.
