The Northern Power Corporation is taking major steps to stabilize the electricity supply across Northern Vietnam as demand is expected to grow sharply in 2026. With rapid economic development driving higher consumption, the Corporation is working in line with Directive 10/CT-TTg and Resolution 70-NQ/TW to avoid possible power shortages.
Ms. Do Nguyet Anh said the strategy is based on four main areas: improving operations, strengthening business coordination, investing in infrastructure, and promoting renewable energy.
To prepare for the peak summer season in 2026, NPC has instructed all units to complete maintenance work and fix grid issues by the end of March. The Corporation is also working closely with local authorities and large industrial users to better estimate electricity demand. At the same time, big consumers are being encouraged to save energy and install rooftop solar systems along with battery storage, so they can reduce pressure on the national grid.
On the infrastructure side, NPC is speeding up key projects to ease grid congestion. In early 2026, important facilities like the 500 kV Vinh Yen Substation and the 220 kV Ba Thien Substation were successfully energized. These projects are important as they help transmit electricity, including imports from the Yunnan Power Grid.
The Corporation is also focusing on projects that improve grid capacity. One example is the 110 kV Na Duong – Lang Son transmission line, which is being completed quickly to support the upcoming Na Duong 2 Thermal Power Plant. This plant is expected to generate about 110 MW by the end of 2026. Similar work is ongoing in other areas to connect hydropower plants and increase the electricity supply.
Since large power projects may not be ready in time for 2026 and 2027, NPC is strongly promoting rooftop solar as a key solution. The Corporation has started installing solar panels at its own offices to set an example. It is also asking the Ministry of Industry and Trade to make it easier for people and businesses to adopt solar power.
NPC has suggested simplifying approval processes, increasing the rate at which excess solar power can be sold back to the grid, and providing tax benefits and financial support. These steps are aimed at making solar energy more affordable and attractive.
Through better planning, faster infrastructure development, and a strong push for renewable energy, NPC is trying to balance rising demand with limited supply and ensure a stable electricity system for both industries and households.
