At least 15 oil and gas producers have filed legal challenges against the European Commission, contesting the carbon dioxide injection capacity rules set under the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA).
The Act requires 44 producers to collectively deliver 50 million tonnes of CO2 injection capacity by 2030, allocated based on their historic production between 2020 and 2023.
“On our way to climate neutrality, we need a portfolio of effective decarbonisation solutions. Carbon capture is part of our strategy to deliver emission reductions and permanent removals for energy-intensive industries,” said Kurt Vandemberge, Director General for Climate Action, after the Commission adopted the NZIA.
