Romanian oil and gas firm OMV Petrom has received all electrolyser modules for a 35MW system to bring green hydrogen production capacity at its Petrobrazi clean fuel facility to its final 55MW.
Adding to a 20MW system in June, the seven Neuman & Esser 5MW electrolyser modules will produce a total of 4,700 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for refining oil and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced at the site.
The modules were funded by €29m ($33.8m) from Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), an economic modernisation package financed by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The initial 20MW system was funded through the same initiative to the tune of €21m ($23.9m).
Combined, the two systems are billed to produce 8,000 tonnes of green hydrogen for up to 660,000 tonnes of clean fuel per year.
The Petrobrazi site has been subject to €750m ($873m) in investment from OMV.
Its development comes as European producers expand e-fuel and SAF capacities in an effort to supply demand stimulated by renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) mandates under the EU Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III).
These require green hydrogen to comprise 1.2% of transport energy in the bloc by 2030.
Radu Căprău, Member of the OMV Executive Board, said the company is also eyeing a 250,000 tonne per year SAF plant for supplying Southeast Europe.
