The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has achieved a major milestone, with 40 lakh households across India now equipped with rooftop solar systems, according to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi. The minister shared the update on Friday, highlighting the growing success of the government’s flagship rooftop solar programme.
Joshi stated that the scheme is transforming citizens from being only electricity consumers into electricity producers. He credited the progress to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the initiative is helping households adopt clean and sustainable energy solutions.
The minister noted that families benefiting from the scheme are witnessing significant reductions in their electricity expenses. In addition to lower power bills, beneficiaries are receiving government subsidies that make rooftop solar installations more affordable. The programme is also helping many households move towards the goal of achieving zero electricity bills through self-generated solar power.
Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to promote rooftop solar adoption on a large scale across the country. The government has set an ambitious target of installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households by March 2027.
The achievement of solarising 40 lakh homes marks an important step toward meeting the scheme’s target while supporting India’s clean energy transition. The initiative is expected to contribute to increased renewable energy capacity, lower carbon emissions, and greater energy independence for households across the nation.
