UK hydrogen firm Protium has opened its second self-developed electrolyser plant in Wales, amid a major ramp-up in its operations.
The 2.5MW Pioneer 2 plant in Port Talbot was officially opened on Tuesday (30 June), after it achieved in May, adding to the firm’s 0.1MW Pioneer 1 project.
Made up of two Nel PEM electrolysers, construction of the facility began in November 2025. It will supply up to one tonne per day of hydrogen to unnamed end-users across transport, industrial, off-grid power, and specialist applications via tube trailers.
“This investment strengthens our capabilities, expands our capacity, and reinforces our commitment to delivering exceptional service while creating new opportunities within the region,” Protium said on LinkedIn.
The opening follows a series of acquisitions, partnerships and supply agreements that have rapidly expanded Protium’s hydrogen production and distribution business.
In May, Protium bought into an -per-year green hydrogen plant in Dorset. Last month, it also signed an offtake deal with ammonia cracking firm H-Power for five tonnes of hydrogen from its .
Alongside those deals, it acquired green hydrogen project, which was selected for government subsidies, and partnered with electrolyser maker to progress it to final investment decision before the end of the year.
Protium and ITM are also planning to jointly develop projects across the UK, including Protium’s 20MW and 30MW projects .
The expansion comes amid wider concerns from the UK hydrogen sector about delays to government strategy and funding decisions.
In June, a group of hydrogen technology manufacturers that continued delays to funding decisions were eroding boardroom confidence and putting investment at risk.
