Relief effort and medical gases mobilised for Afghanistan quake

A major relief effort is underway following an earthquake in eastern Afghanistan which has killed at least 800 people.

The Afghan Red Cross says its teams and medical teams have rushed to affected areas in the Kunar province, amid reports of destroyed villages and roads that have become blocked in mountainous areas.

Medical oxygen is in transit and demand is likely to spiral to treat the injured.

International charity Medecins Sans Frontieres warned in July that pressure was already growing on hospitals in Afghanistan, as paediatric patient numbers rise.
