Renergen enjoys helium ‘head start’

Renergen has a “head start” for the next three-to-five years while other importers strive to get their South Africa infrastructure up to speed, according to CEO and Managing Director Stefano Marani.

Addressing MENA Industrial Gases Conference delegates in Abu Dhabi by video link, in a session on ‘Helium from South Africa – what happens next?’, he said its first mover advantage is particularly important given current challenges facing South Africa’s energy industry, which he described as an impending “gas cliff”.

Its $1.2bn Virginia Gas Project, run through subsidiary Tetra4, spans a vast 187,000 acres with extensive additional exploration rights. Alongside helium, the Virginia plant serves as the country’s first LNG plant and Renergen is the first and only onshore petroleum production right holder.
