SMA Altenso Reaches Gigawatt Milestone in Hydrogen Technology with Namibia Project

SMA Altenso (Altenso), a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA), is advancing the flexible use of renewable energy through innovative global projects. After successfully delivering and installing SMA inverter technology for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s hydrogen project, Altenso has now achieved a milestone of over 1 gigawatt (GW) in total power delivered for hydrogen applications. The current project, which combines photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production, highlights Altenso’s strategic role as a global leader in sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso, highlighted the company’s achievement of a gigawatt milestone and the successful implementation of over 80 hydrogen projects, primarily producing green hydrogen using PV and wind energy. He emphasized Altenso’s extensive technological expertise and international project management experience, which are crucial for executing increasingly complex projects, including offshore implementations. The projects supported by Altenso enable the production of up to 130,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, contributing significantly to the decarbonization of industrial processes.

SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert emphasized the importance of stable grid integration and load control in the evolving hydrogen and renewable energy market. He highlighted SMA’s advanced technologies and Altenso’s project expertise in driving renewable energy integration and shaping the future of energy.

Altenso is leading system integration for a battery storage system (BESS) and providing power-to-gas (P2G) solutions for hydrogen production at a project on Namibia’s Atlantic coast. The PV farm and battery inverter technology were successfully installed by the end of 2024, with hydrogen production set for mid-2025. SMA’s specialized rectifier solution, based on IGBT technology, ensures compatibility with various electrolyzers and enhances grid stability with integrated services like fault ride-through and reactive power support.

Altenso has created an advanced energy management system (EMS) tailored for projects like this, designed to optimize sustainable hydrogen production by utilizing PV forecasts and dynamic demand profiles.
