UK MEMS semiconductor technology specialist Silicon Microgravity (SMG) has secured £6m ($8m) in funding to expand its UK semiconductor manufacturing capacity and accelerate commercial partnerships across Europe and the US.
The funding round includes investment from the state-backed UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund (UKI2S), a public sector-backed venture capital partnership managed by Future Planet Capital.
MEMS technology is becoming increasingly integrated into modern defence systems, satellite communications, navigation, and sensing applications.
Manufacturing these semiconductor devices relies on ultra-high purity gases for deposition, etching, doping, and other fabrication processes, as well as maintaining stable production environments.
Alexander Leigh, Investment Director of Defence and Security at UKI2S, said, “Semiconductors, sensing and advanced manufacturing are increasingly critical to both national security and the future competitiveness of the UK space sector.”
According to SMG, its MEMS accelerometers are already integrated into advanced space programmes and dual-use commercial deployments.
The investment marks UKI2S’s first participation in SMG through its Space Portfolio, building on its existing investment through the fund’s Defence & Security Portfolio.
According to market research, the global MEMS market was valued at an estimated $17.52bn in 2025.
