SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) has officially commenced construction of the first battery energy storage system (BESS) facility in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). The 40-megawatt Binga BESS, co-located at the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant in Itogon, Benguet, marks a significant milestone in advancing energy storage capabilities in the region.

The Binga BESS is SNAP’s first battery storage project in Benguet and the third in its growing portfolio. With financial close secured, construction has now begun, reinforcing SNAP’s commitment to integrating innovative energy solutions, enhancing grid reliability, and supporting the country’s transition to renewable energy.

Joseph Yu, President and CEO of SNAP, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “We are proud to break ground on our first BESS in Benguet and the first facility of its kind in the Cordillera. This project underscores our commitment to sustainability and advancing the Philippines’ energy transition.”

Mike Hosillos, SNAP’s Chief Operations Officer, highlighted the company’s focus on responsible operations, transparency, and collaboration with the local community. “We deeply value the trust and support of this community. From environmental stewardship to local job creation, we are committed to being not just a facility in this community but a true partner in its growth,” he said.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan from the Department of Energy and Norwegian Ambassador to the Philippines, Christian Halaas Lyster, who expressed strong support for the initiative.

The Binga BESS project follows SNAP’s 24-megawatt Magat BESS and the ongoing development of the 16-megawatt Magat BESS Phase 2. Once completed, these projects will bring SNAP’s total battery storage capacity to 80 megawatts by 2026, further strengthening the company’s role in enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy into the power system.
