Samal City’s latest renewable energy project is already showing strong returns, both economically and environmentally. The city’s PHP50 million solar-powered parking structure, located on the Samal City Hall grounds, has generated more than PHP132,000 in electricity savings just weeks after its formal commissioning in May 2025, according to reports from the city government.

The facility forms part of the city’s broader strategy to expand clean energy adoption and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources. By contributing additional capacity to the local grid, the system helps bolster Samal’s power supply — particularly critical amid the area’s recurring power interruptions.

Project Specifications

The solar-powered structure integrates a 500 kVA grid-tied system composed of 1,036 solar panels, each rated at 450 watts. Spanning 2,690 square meters, the facility doubles as a shaded parking area, providing over 190 parking slots while optimizing both land use and energy generation.

Jointly developed by the City Government of Samal, HG Agri Industrial Machineries, and Greenergy Development Corporation, the project was officially inaugurated on February 6, 2025. Since then, it has been operating continuously, channeling clean solar energy directly into the local grid.

Local Leadership and Climate-Resilient Development

City officials have highlighted the project’s dual benefits of enhancing energy security and promoting climate-resilient infrastructure. Outgoing Mayor Al David Uy noted that the solar parking structure stands as a key legacy project as he transitions to a new political role, reflecting his administration’s commitment to sustainable development.

The Samal City solar carpark is part of a broader national trend as local government units across the Philippines increasingly invest in renewable energy solutions that balance cost-effectiveness with environmental responsibility.
