Sri Lanka Kicks Off 50 MW Solar Power Project With Groundbreaking Ceremony

The ground-breaking ceremony for the 50 MW solar power project, which can be extended up to 120 MW, was held in Sri Lanka on April 5, 2025. The event was part of the official agenda during the visit of the Prime Minister of India to Sri Lanka from April 4 to April 6, 2025. NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, is making a major step towards enhancing India’s presence in the energy landscape of neighboring countries through the development of a 120 MW solar project in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.

The project is being implemented through Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a joint venture between NTPC Limited and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) of Sri Lanka, with each holding a 50 percent share. The project involves an estimated investment of approximately 100 million US dollars. For the first phase of the project, which involves the development of 50 MW of solar capacity, TPCL has signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the Ceylon Electricity Board and an Implementation Agreement with the Government of Sri Lanka. These agreements provide a clear framework for the project’s development and future operation.

The solar power project is expected to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s efforts to diversify its energy mix. By adding substantial renewable energy capacity, the project will help reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels. It is estimated that the project will avoid approximately 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, supporting Sri Lanka’s environmental sustainability goals and enhancing energy security. This initiative represents an important step in strengthening energy cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, while contributing to the broader goal of promoting clean energy and sustainable development in the region.
