Sungrow, UNSW Sydney and JT Solar Launch AI-Enabled Community Energy Project in Australia

Sungrow, UNSW Sydney and JT Solar Technology, trading as Aussie Hybrid Solar, have launched an AI-enabled community energy project at The Gibraltar Bowral in the Southern Highlands of Australia. The project integrates solar generation, battery energy storage and artificial intelligence-driven energy management to improve energy resilience, increase renewable energy utilisation and reduce reliance on grid electricity.

The community-based virtual power plant (VPP) project is designed to address the fluctuating energy requirements of commercial facilities such as hotels and event venues. The system can determine when electricity should be consumed, stored or discharged based on factors including solar generation, site demand, electricity prices, grid conditions and battery health.

At the core of the project are Sungrow’s ST200CF PowerKeeper battery energy storage system, deployed across four PK stacks, and the SH110CX hybrid inverter, installed by Aussie Hybrid Solar. The equipment is coordinated through UNSW Sydney’s AI Energy Management System (AI EMS), enabling intelligent scheduling and optimisation of energy flows.

According to Sungrow, the system is designed to go beyond conventional solar-plus-storage applications by providing automated energy management capabilities. The AI-based platform can optimise battery charging and discharging according to renewable generation, electricity demand, market prices and grid requirements, while also considering battery health.

PowerKeeper Supports Energy Resilience at The Gibraltar Bowral

The Gibraltar Bowral, a premium hotel and event venue, has variable electricity requirements across guest services and event operations. The integrated storage system is designed to provide greater reliability and backup capability while helping maximise the use of locally generated solar energy.

The PowerKeeper system features a modular, DC-coupled architecture that allows capacity to be expanded according to changing site requirements. Its design also supports retrofits by reducing the need for complex transformer upgrades and additional grid approvals, while enabling compatibility with existing PV installations and SH110CX hybrid inverters.

The system is designed for applications where space and installation flexibility are important. Its compact architecture and safety certifications allow it to be deployed in commercial and hospitality environments while meeting applicable safety and regulatory requirements.

Sungrow said the battery system has undergone extreme-environment testing and incorporates real-time battery health monitoring to support stable long-term operation. The system can also provide full-site backup power, helping reduce the risk of disruptions to hotel and event operations.

The PowerKeeper technology also serves as a foundation for AI-based energy scheduling and VPP dispatch, allowing charging and discharging to be automatically optimised according to solar output, electricity demand, electricity prices and grid conditions.

Collaboration Combines Solar, Storage and AI

The project brings together expertise from technology provider Sungrow, UNSW Sydney’s AI energy management research, and JT Solar Technology/Aussie Hybrid Solar’s solar installation capabilities.

Richard Chen, Business Development Manager at Sungrow, said the value of an integrated energy system extends beyond its financial payback and requires safety, reliability and intelligent responses to changing energy requirements.

Steve Doyle, co-owner of JT Solar and Voltval, highlighted Sungrow’s technical support during system design, noting that the company’s verification of calculations helped the project team with system sizing and assessing potential savings for the client.

By combining solar generation, battery storage, AI-driven energy management and VPP capabilities, the project demonstrates how commercial properties can move toward more flexible and resilient energy systems while increasing renewable energy utilisation and reducing dependence on conventional grid supply.
