SunHydrogen Secures 19.9% Stake In NewHydrogen To Expand Clean Hydrogen Technologies

SunHydrogen has announced a strategic investment in NewHydrogen, securing a 19.9% ownership stake in the company, along with the right to purchase additional shares. The investment aims to strengthen collaboration between the two companies and expand their participation in both decentralized and centralized clean hydrogen markets.

The partnership brings together two technology developers pursuing different approaches to hydrogen production using water as a primary feedstock. SunHydrogen is developing a solar-powered technology designed to produce hydrogen directly from sunlight and water, while NewHydrogen is working on a thermochemical process intended for large-scale industrial hydrogen production.

SunHydrogen’s technology focuses on decentralized hydrogen generation through modular panels that use sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen at the point of use. The approach is designed to reduce dependence on centralized production facilities and limit the need to transport hydrogen over long distances. Potential applications include hydrogen fueling stations, agricultural operations and backup power systems for data centres.

By producing hydrogen closer to where it is consumed, the technology aims to address localized energy requirements while reducing transportation-related costs and emissions. The company continues to develop its technology as it works towards achieving important technical and commercial milestones.

NewHydrogen, meanwhile, is developing ThermoLoop®, a thermochemical technology intended to support centralized, industrial-scale hydrogen production. The process is designed to use high-temperature heat from power plants and potential future nuclear reactors to produce hydrogen. Its target applications include refineries, steel mills and ammonia manufacturing facilities, where large and continuous hydrogen supplies are required.

Both companies aim to improve production efficiency by reducing conventional energy conversion steps. Their approaches seek to use available energy sources more directly rather than converting energy into electricity before using it for conventional water electrolysis.

SunHydrogen President and Chief Executive Officer Tim Young said the investment would enable the company to support industrial-scale hydrogen production, particularly in regions that depend on imported energy, while maintaining its focus on decentralized solar hydrogen technology.

The investment provides SunHydrogen with exposure to a complementary hydrogen production pathway while allowing both companies to continue advancing their respective technologies.

Although the two approaches target different market segments, the collaboration reflects growing interest in alternative methods of producing low-carbon hydrogen for industrial and distributed energy applications. Both technologies remain under development, and their future commercial potential will depend on technical progress, production efficiency and successful deployment at scale.
